Bumpass Hell in Lassen Volcanic National Park is home to numerous hydrothermal features including fumaroles, hot springs, and mud pots. In one mud pot, liquid pyrite, the mineral more commonly known as Fool's Gold, combines with the boiling mud to create a visceral blue-green colored soup. After discovering this special mud pot, I patiently waited as the flowing pyrite and mud combined to create fantastic patterns before I took this shot.
